“For so many reasons it’s been a hard year for central city residents and the wider Tāmaki Makaurau community”, says Frith Walker, head of placemaking for Eke Panuku Development Auckland. “The Summer on Queens Wharf programme is a great excuse for people to get out and about and reconnect with their community”.

There’s something for everyone at Queens Wharf this summer. For the whānau, there’s a group bike ride and picnic for little ones with Bike Auckland, a wharf fishing morning with Blue Light, and an underwater Virtual Reality experience centred around the sustainability of the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana in partnership with Blake Trust.

Alongside the Virtual Reality experience, Sustainable Coastlines will be presenting Love Your Coast - an interactive presentation on ocean health. On the same weekend you’ll be able to take steps towards reducing your plastic consumption by making your very own wax wrap to take home and cover your kai. The sustainability theme continues with the Queens Clothing Swap on Waitangi Weekend - a chance to freshen up your wardrobe while reducing waste and doing better by the environment.

For the arts minded there will be two photography exhibitions on the Queens Wharf fenceline over the summer period - KAHA [Strength], curated by the Women’s Work collective, and Connections: Regenerate, a group show curated by participants of a seven week mentorship programme overseen by internationally renowned photographer, Tom Ang. Also on the arts calendar is Ngā Tohu o te Taiao, a live sand art performance that reflects on the environment and season of raumati (summer), combining art with matauranga māori (maori knowledge).

For the yogis out there there are six sessions of Sunrise Yoga, featuring New Zealand’s top yoga practitioners curated by WE:AR, delivering the special alchemy of community, sea air, ancient wisdom and spectacular views.

And for all the early birds, Morning People returns to the wharf for the third year running, jump-starting your day with DJs, dancing and coffee as the sun rises over the sparkling Waitematā.

All activities are completely free, with some activities ticketed to help manage numbers. Visit the events page on the Queens Wharf Facebook page for more information and to reserve a spot.

The Summer on Queens Wharf programme is brought to you by Eke Panuku Development Auckland with help from Interesting Things.
