Wynyard Quarter celebration

On Saturday 7 August from 8am – 5pm, we’ll be celebrating the people, places and spaces of Wynyard Quarter with a day of FREE entertainment, workshops & activities.

It’s been 10 years since Wynyard Quarter opened to the public in 2011, and Haumi is a celebration to acknowledge the past, the present and look together to the future.

HAUMI means to join all together – and this whānau-friendly day represents the essence of all people in our place (Wynyard Quarter) living, working and playing together. 

Kia kotahi te iwi, kia haumi te waka. One people, one waka, one journey.

Starting the day with a pōwhiri at 8am and finishing with a Silo Park Cinema 3pm screening of The Croods: A New Age, in-between there will be multitude of activities take place across the waterfront including all the below and more yet to be announced. 

Outdoor games - Kids gone fishing – Face painting - Outdoor group fitnessFor the Love of Bees workshops –– NZ Classic Yacht display – Poi making – Live music on the tram – SS Puke Sailings – Walking tours – Street performers – AT kids learn to ride - 3 Ring Riot workshops – Open Fort creative play - Passerby portraits - live music by AKSamba Bazilian Beats - and so much more!

There will be something for everyone, so make sure you gather your loved ones, come down to Wynyard Quarter and enjoy the day of āhuareka (celebrations).

Nau mai, haere mai to Haumi at Silo Park for games, face painting, food trucks & entertainment from 10am, then at 3pm a FREE outdoor Silo Cinema screening of The Croods: A New Age


Pōwhiri

 Saturday the 7th of August will start with a pōwhiri to open this special occasion HAUMI: Kia Kotahi te iwi, kia haumi te waka |One people, one waka, one journey, Wynyard Quarter celebration.

You are warmly invited to join us to be a part of this experience and be guided through the pōwhiri by our Kaitautoko and He Pia He Tauira rangatahi who will share and explain the meaning of each step, so that we will be able to engage in the experience all together.

 Manuhiri (visitors) will be welcomed to Wynyard Quarter by Tangata Whenua (people of the land) Mana Whenua, Eke Panuku , Te Puru O Tāmaki and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.

FITNESS ON THE WATERFRONT

Tidal Steps, Karanga Plaza – 10:00am – 11:00am

Grab your friends and join in the free ‘Fitness on the Waterfront’ amongst the beautiful backdrop of the Tāmaki Makaurau skyline & the beautiful waitematā harbour.

While you’re working out, your kids can join in the free taonga puoro (traditional Māori musical instrument) interactive workshop with Shane McClean also on Karanga Plaza from 10am – 12pm to make their own clay pōtangotango (Māori flute).

TAONGA PUORO (Traditional Māori instrument) INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP

Karanga Plaza – 10:00am – 12:00pm

Join Shane Mclean in an interactive Taonga Puoro workshop including a demonstration of koauau, pōtangotango, pukaea, hongi ihu, purerehua and pūtatara.

Participants will be able to create their own pōtangotango (Māori flute) with moulding clay.

Sessions are at 10am and 11am with a maximum of 20 per workshop on a first in first served basis.


MODULAR PUMP TRACK

Eastern Viaduct – 10:00am – 5:00pm

The ever-popular travelling pump track will be back on the waterfront for Haumi, so bring your bike and scooter and have a go racing around the track.


AT KIDS LEARN TO RIDE

Eastern Viaduct – 10:00am – 1:00pm

Meet Auckland Transport’s team of qualified instructors for a ‘Kids Learn to Ride’ session on Eastern viaduct in Wynyard Quarter.

Instructors will help increase kids’ confidence and bike handling skills as well as offer some simple steps and tips for parents to get kids riding. Bring your own bike or try one of ours.

Sessions will be weather dependant and run on a drop-in basis.


3 RING RIOT WORKSHOP

Silo Park, Playspace – 10:00am – 1:00pm

The 3 Ring Riot will host a fun and colourful circus zone with workshops, circus games and fun activities for the whole family. Look out for the stilt walkers from 12:00 – 1:00pm.


KIDS GONE FISHIN’

Brigham Street Pontoon, North Wharf – 10:00am – 12:00pm

Back by popular demand – Kids gone Fishin’ with Blue Light will involve some fishing fun off Wynyard Wharf, accessed by the North Wharf end of Brigham Street.  Grab your kids and their fishing rods or use the free handlines (limited number), bait will be free and there will be plenty of chances to win spot prizes.


COLOURING IN GRAZERS KIDS’ ART

Te Wero Island – 10:00am – 3:00pm

Try your hand at colouring in at the Te Wero Library Container.


PASSERBY PORTRAITS

Te Wero Island – 10:00am – 3:00pm

Meet artists from ‘A Supported Life’ and enjoy a chat with them while they show off their caricature skills by crafting a ‘Passerby Portrait’ of you.


MOTAT TRAM RIDES

Wynyard Quarter Tram Loop – 10:00am – 4:00pm

Tram rides will be operating from 10am – 4pm. Jump on board to hear about the history of Wynyard Quarter as you loop around the precinct. Live performance from Emma Paki will take place on board the tram at 11am.


Family fun at the Flagship

Sustainable Coastlines – 10:00am – 4:00pm

Come to visit the Sustainable Coastlines Flagship (look for the shipping container buildings at 55 Madden Street) and make your own bunting out of coffee sacks, great for you to take home for your next party and super sustainable! There will also be games, and if you are one of the first 50 you can enjoy a free delicious Phoenix Organic drink.  


EMMA PAKI LIVE ON THE TRAM

Wynyard Quarter Tram Loop – 11:00am - 11.30am

Jump on board the Tram with multi award winning and Aotearoa’s indigenous icon of contemporary Māori Music, Emma Paki as she performs her individualistic originals for you while travelling the Wynyard Quarter tram loop.

HERITAGE MARINA CLASSIC YACHTS ON DISPLAY

Heritage Marina – 10:00am – 4:00pm

The beautiful classic wooden yachts are some of the finest in Auckland’s fleet. The signal flags will be up, and the skippers will be aboard ready to share stories of their history – wander down to the pontoon by Silo Marina to check them out.


MAU RAKAU (Māori Weaponry)

Te Wero Island – 10:00am – 12:00pm

Meet Matua Malcolm Kerehoma & Matua Taura Te Whata who will facilitate a Mau Rākau workshop on Te Wero Island. This will include a wero demonstration, explanation of the taiaha and its different parts and uses, footwork exercises, crowd participation utilising taiaha and on guard positions, as well as Taiaha takaro (traditional Maōri game with taiaha).

Sessions are at 10am and 11am with a maximum of 12 per workshop on a first in first served basis.  All are welcome to watch.


MARITIME MUSEUM PRESENTS SS PUKE SAILINGS
Visitors Berth, Karanga Plaza – 10.30am – 3:00pm

Toot toot!  Head out to the Museum’s 19th Century steam tug SS PUKE for a short steaming trip around the Viaduct Marina for a gold coin donation.

Look out for the Maritime Museum flag located next to the Wynyard Crossing Bridge Hutt to get a chance to hop on-board.

Trips will be running from 10:30am – 2:30pm with a maximum of 5 passengers at a time.  Trips will run for approximately 15 minutes and seats are to be booked on a first in first served basis.  Life jackets will be provided and must be worn at all times.


URA TABU PACIFIC DANCE

Karanga Plaza to Silo Park – 11.00am – 12:00pm

Ura Tabu Pacific Dance will take you on a cultural dance journey through Wynyard Quarter.


FOR THE LOVE OF BEES: DIRT, CLAY & SOIL CARBON SPONGE

Daldy Street Community Garden – 11:00am - 12:00pm

Join ‘For the Love of Bees’ in looking at different soil structures under a microscope, see what's moving where and what's not. Learn about how compost and plants can help to transform dirt and clay into abundant, alive and productive soil. Also learn how this alive soil can help us with carbon drawdown, water retention and healthy food production.


POI MAKING ON THE WATERFRONT

Te Wero Island, Library Container – 11am – 1:00pm

Join us for a fun workshop on Te Wero Island and learn how to make your very own unique Poi to take home; a fun activity for the whole whānau and kids of all ages.

DIY Poi Packs will be provided with poi-making guidance by facilitators from Jaaai inc.

STORYTELLING ON THE WATERFRONT

Experience fun interactive story telling of Māori myths and legends using māori books, waiata māori sound and visuals that incorporate whanaungatanga (relationship), kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and wairuatanga (spirituality).

The Open Fort will be facilitating an afternoon of games and creative play for all ages.


 ARO TĀKARO ON THE WATERFRONT (Traditional Māori games)

Enter the Enchanted Tree Lane for a Silent Disco experience with our Magical Disco Host under the green space that changes appearance around you in the fairy light setting.

Dance your way through the mystical maze to find the colourful Family Tree and share your stories of family, connection and unity together.

Watch a spectacle of Strongmen and Strongwoman completing a series of events in preparation for the upcoming New Zealand’s Strongest Man and Woman 2021 competition.
