As the 36th America’s Cup Event beckons closer, all the hard work of Wynyard Edge Alliance and Eke Panuku to get the waterfront ready comes to light.

In the early hours of 30 October 2020, before sunrise, a group of approximately 50 gathered to participate in a ceremony to celebrate the completion of the construction of two of the team bases on Wynyard Wharf. Panuku invited mana whenua to lead the ceremony, and representatives from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara, Ngāti Paoa, Wynyard Edge Alliance, Panuku Development Auckland and America’s Cup Events Ltd attended.

Clay and Taiaha Hawke of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei recited ancient karakia during a walk around the perimeter of the syndicate bases. The purpose of the karakia is to lift the tapu that was infused into the land throughout the construction process. Going forward, the space is now culturally safe for future activities.

To conclude the karakia whakawātea, the group walked together to Humble Canteen on North Wharf to enjoy kai over mihimihi and whakawhanaungatanga.

David Rankin spoke on behalf of Panuku and shared recognition to the partnership with mana whenua, Wynyard Edge Alliance and America’s Cup Event Ltd to deliver the extensive infrastructure works required.

David gave special mention to the success of the alliance structure, saying it set the benchmark for health and safety, partnerships, and finished results going forward.

“The rate and pace of the change we have seen over the last two years is impressive and a credit to all – this site was previously used as the Bulk Liquid Storage Terminal, which once served a purpose, but now no longer has a place on Auckland’s waterfront,” he explained.

Daniel Haines, Head of Māori Outcomes at Panuku, acknowledged the work Panuku and mana whenua have undertaken throughout the construction project. Mana whenua have seen the project as an opportunity to undertake environmental remediation and enhance the mauri of Te Waitematā.

David also highlighted in his speech the work of the waterfront team: “Thank you to the Waterfront Priority Location Director, Fiona Knox and her team. A lot of work and passion goes into the waterfront and the handing over of the bases to America’s Cup Events is an important and exciting milestone to have reached,” he said.
